The Costa Rica Ministry of Health has issued a national alert after 19 people died from consuming alcohol tainted with toxic levels of methanol. (People)
Just hours ago, the Costa Rica Ministry of Health announced that 19 people had died from tainted alcohol. Just weeks after several people died in the Dominican republic from what many believe may have been tainted alcohol, now it is happening in Costa Rica.
I don’t think there is any reason to believe that the two are related in any way. But it does make people start to wonder if the alcohol is safe in Central America? We always talk about whether or not the water is safe, but nobody ever thinks about the alcohol. Until now.
Officials have confiscated over 30,000 bottles of alcohol that they believed to be tainted. The affected bottles from are from brands Guaro Montano, Guaro Gran Apache, Estrella Aguardiente, Aguardiente Barón Rojo, Aguardiente Timbuka and Molotov Aguardiente.
Methanol — which is typically found in antifreeze, varnishes, and fuels — is often added to counterfeit or informally made alcoholic drinks, according to the World Heath Organization.
It’s unlikely that you’d be drinking these alcohol brands,as a tourist. But then again, you never know what alcohol you get when you order a mixed drink. So the question remains, would you travel to Costa Rica today to party?
